SCIENCE- A STRUCTURE is a solid that has a shape, size, and purpose. It holds a load. - The STRENGTH of a structure is it's ability to hold a load. - The STABILITY of an object is the ability to maintain balance and to stay in one spot. We are beginning our study on strong and stable structures. We will be using quite a few materials that you may have at home. If you are able to send in any of the items mentioned below, it would be appreciated. Thanks! - paper tubes (wrapping, paper towel, etc.) - plastic spoons - paper plates - wool - playdough - rinsed plastic containers Building Boats - Today we built boats that had to float and be moved by a magnet. Students were asked to explain the forces that were being used.
Students have worked on a slide show about a Natural Force.
Please see the project expectations below. Presentations will be this week and next week. docs.google.com/document/d/16zTinLZJrNmg2kLMSYbrJrCafHrQzAMxuNbDiIRHav4/edit?usp=sharing Students brought study notes home today with definitions for all force vocabulary. See pages below
Forces in nature, such as high water, can have significant impact on humans and the environment and need to be regarded with respect. Forces in nature can not be controlled. https://www.weatherwizkids.com/ There are several types of forces that cause movement. Forces cause objects to speed up, slow down, or change direction through direct contact or through interaction at a distance (indirect). I understand what DIRECT forces and INDIRECT forces mean. We are learning about forces. I can identify a force as a push or a pull that causes an object to move. A force can also be a twist. I can explain how forces are used in everyday life. https://youtu.be/uoKo3DbfYZk https://youtu.be/WSY4HzWZIlo https://youtu.be/vAThuCmwp9I I can identify different kinds of forces: Magnetism - the force of a magnet that attracts objects containing iron or nickel. (It can also be a push force) Friction - a pushing force that happens when two objects slide over top of each other. Gravitational Force - the force that pulls objects towards the earth. Electrostatic Force - this type of force is the push or pull that happens between charged objects. Muscular Force - the muscles in your body pull on your bones and this allows us to move. Soils notes were sent home before the test. Completed tests and soil paragraph will be sent home NOV. 21.
There will be a Soils Test on Nov. 12th. Please use the study sheet to review concepts learned in class. Compost lessons still to come they will not be on the quiz. soil_study_sheet.pdf Soil is not just dirt but an essential source of life and nutrients for many organisms, including humans. Soil provides a base for forests, fields, farms, and gardens and is necessary to many different kinds of animals and plants. Through investigations, students will learn that soils are composed of a variety of living and non-living things and earth materials; that there are different kinds of soil; and that the unique characteristics, composition, and condition of each soil type determine its capacity to sustain life. This unit will continue through to mid February -We are learning about the 3 PHYSICAL LANDFORM REGIONS: Great Lakes/ St Lawrence Lowlands Canadian Shield Hudson Bay Lowlands -We are learning about the types of occupations each region would be most likely to have. -We are learning about the relationship between a country, province, municipality and town or city, and will identify their responsibilities. We are starting to wrap up our unit on mapping skills and students will be writing a quiz on TUESDAY NOVEMBER 5th. Please use materials provided below to assist with review. See the study guide. (Students will also be asked to try to label Provinces and Territories on a blank map of Canada. THEY MUST know where Ontario is on the map and be able to label the capital city - TORONTO- and capital of Canada ) msgordonadm.weebly.com/uploads/1/1/2/0/112063009/scanned_from_a_xerox_multifunction_printer__12_.pdf msgordonadm.weebly.com/uploads/1/1/2/0/112063009/mappingcanadafreeversion.pdf msgordonadm.weebly.com/uploads/1/1/2/0/112063009/scanned_from_a_xerox_multifunction_printer__11_.pdf To get us started in Social Studies Grade 3's have started a short unit on Mapping. Students are encouraged to try to commit names of continents and oceans to memory and be able to locate them on a map of the world. Encourage the use of directional language when describing location of places on a map |
